The next Assembly election is on Thursday 2 March.

If you want to vote, you must register to vote by Tuesday 14 February if you aren’t already registered.

To register to vote in Northern Ireland, download the Northern Ireland registration form (PDF).

Once you’ve completed the registration form, return it your local Area Electoral Office. You can find your local Area Electoral Office details on the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland website.

Don’t forget your photo ID

When you go to your polling station on election day don’t forget to bring a correct form of photo ID. Without it you won’t be able to vote!

The following forms of ID can be accepted at the polling station:

  • A UK or Irish passport
  • A UK, Irish or EEA driving licence
  • A Translink Senior Smartpass
  • A Translink 60+ Smartpass
  • A Translink War Disabled Smartpass
  • A Translink Blind Person’s Smartpass
  • An Electoral Identity Card

The identification does not need to be ‘current’ but the presiding officer at the polling station must be satisfied that the photograph matches that of the person intending to vote.

No other form of photo ID can be accepted at the polling station. This includes ID such as work passes or parking blue badges.

For more information on applying for an electoral ID card, visit http://www.eoni.org.uk/Electoral-Identity-Card/How-to-apply or call 0800 4320 712.

Voting by post or proxy

Apply by 5pm on Friday 10 February

If you are unable to vote in person on polling day, you can apply to vote by post or by proxy (where you appoint someone to vote on your behalf).

You must give a reason for the application and explain why you can’t vote in person.

The deadline for applying for a postal or proxy vote is 5pm on Friday 10 February. Please bear in mind that applications must be posted or delivered by hand to your local Area Electoral Office, so you should make sure you leave enough time for your application to be received.

Application forms are available on the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland website.
