Ballycastle SDLP Councillor Dónal Cunningham is calling on the Health Minister Jim Wells to immediately halt plans to close the Dalriada Hospital after this morning’s announcement that 20 intermediate care beds would close from the end of November to the end of the financial year effectively meaning the closure of the hospital.

Councillor Cunningham who is the current Chair of Moyle Council has requested an emergency Council meeting with Senior Trust officials and is also organising a public meeting continued:

“This is a flawed decision, which I am asking the Health Minister to reverse. I spent this afternoon in the hospital with staff and patients, many of whom were reduced to tears at the news.”

“I also met with senior Trust officials on site who outlined their plans which are part of a range of measures, in order to bridge a £6.9million year end pressure. This will mean that intermediate care and MS Centre patients and staff will transfer to other local hospitals. This is entirely unacceptable, and completely overlooks the dedication and professionalism of the staff in the Dalriada Hospital.”

“I am asking people of the area to fight like never before to save Dalriada Hospital.”

Are we going to be left with anything in Ballycastle and the Glens?
I’m sure there are other ways of saving money, let’s start at the top.

Hi Just wanted to say how important Dalriada Hospital has been for my family, my sister who has MS in advanced stages and totally dependant, has only been there twice but, it has enabled my mum who is the main carer to have a break, and my sister to have a break from my mum, which is so necessary for both their mental health.

My sister can’t go on an “ordinary” holiday she needs hoists, and nurses, someone to feed her, someone to dress, change, wash her, and to help her with all the personal intimate toilet care….

Ballycastle is such a nice location, it means family can stay nearby and take her to the seaside and daytime trips. Things like this can mean the world to someone who can do nothing but lie in a bed all day, she is is almost entirely blind. So just staying a few times year are one of the things that help give her some quality of life. I would like to take the oportunity to thanks staff and all those involved in keeping Dalriada running. I sincerely hope it will be kept open.

Has any one thought of an email petition on Change or something similar?

Best wishes
