Moyle Council voted to affirm it’s support for and endorse the NIAMH’s (Northern Ireland Association for Mental Heath) Change Your Mind – Stamp Out Stigma campaign, which aims to change the current levels of stigma, discrimination and negative attitudes towards people with experience of mental ill-health. Councillor Dónal Cunningam who proposed the motion said “This is a matter that all of us should take seriously,as a result of negative attitudes to mental ill-health, people are stereotyped, labelled, discriminated against and experience outright prejudice. Continued stigma leads to wider social exclusion both in local communities and in the wider policy and health arena. Spending on the provision of mental health services is downgraded and the issues are not prioritised in policy development and legislation.”

“The stigma has to be removed and Mental Health services given the priority it is due”
