Cunningham questions need for “unsightly” harbour security fencing

11 03 2012

Speaking after discussions with the Rathlin Community Development Association and a Councillors surgery with residents of the island, Ballycastle SDLP Councillor Dónal Cunningham is backing the islanders call for a review of the overbearing security infrastructure in Ballycastle harbour. Islanders are the harbours most frequent users and it is important that council listens to their views.
Accepting that there is a need for a level of security, he questioned the need for such high and intimidating fencing and razor wire.
The high fencing in place along the main jetty area is extreme, unsightly and unwelcoming for the increasing numbers of Ballycastle’s tourists, residents and ferry passengers. The harbour area was once a pleasant and open area enjoyed by many. The removal of this unnecessary fencing would be in keeping with other seafront improvements.
