Ireland progressesd to the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals and will play Wales next Saturday.

A 36 – 6 win over Italy came courtesy of  two Keith Earl second  half tries to lift his total for the tournament to four, while captain Brian O’Driscoll also ran in an eye-catching try.

Ronan O’Gara celebrated his restoration as first choice fly-half by kicking 16 points and barely putting a foot wrong in a display that will surely see him start against Wales.

Many of Ireland’s big-game players delivered with Stephen Ferris and Sean O’Brien, the man of the match, rampant and Gordon D’Arcy producing his best performance for some time.

Ireland: Kearney; Bowe, O’Driscoll, D’Arcy, Earls; O’Gara, Murray; Healy, Best, Ross; O’Callaghan, O’Connell; Ferris, O’Brien, Heaslip. Replacements: Sexton for O’Gara (67), Reddan for Murray (73), Court for Healy (72), Cronin for Best (53), Ryan for O’Connell, Trimble for O’Driscoll (73), Leamy for Ferris (72).
